Tesagure! Bukatsu Cafe Has Memes on the Menu

Akihabara street snaps can only mean one thing: We're on our way to eat something!

I think we can all agree that the dialogue served in slice of life shows are cut from a very stale part of the pie--I mean, who actually has stilted conversations like that? Real life discussions are more of a free-for-all than a back-and-forth. That's why Tesagure! Bukatsumono hit home for me. The banter is unscripted, free-flowing and fun. The on-the-spot gags have a mind of their own, influincing the characters, plot development, and now a limited-time menu at Akihabara maid cafe Pinafore.

Pinafore has been in operation for over 10 years as one of Akihabara's oldest maid cafes. It was featured in the Densha Otoko TV series and its adorable outfits have graced a number of dolls and figures.

Hina Satoh is reppin' her blue hair with this "breast milk-infused" blue carbonado udon that's advertised to make you lose your appetite on sight. For those of you who have never experienced 5-minute Japanese meals, the dish is udon noodles served with milk and melted cheese for a taste and texture similar to macaroni and cheese except with more slurping. Just like mom used to make.

This threadbare panties stew came to us straight from the mouth of Yua Suzuki. The old cotton tasted suspiciously familiar to the expired white bread sold at my local supermarket. The meaty stew, on the other hand, could gave Chef Boyardee a run for his money. Make sure there's no sauce on your chin when you ask your maid to take a picture with her!

Each item comes with a pin of the girl they're based on, with a secret pin awarded for collecting all five in the set. But we gotta pace ourselves--don't want the maids thinking we came just to stuff our faces and collect limited-edition swag.

Two dishes was all we had time for which means we didn't get to try Aoi Takahashi's "anything goes" icecream parfait, Mobuko Sonota's "group pile" pancakes or Koharu Tanaka's "too stupid to cross the road" chicken bowl. Speaking of Koharu, her voice actresses, Ayaka Ohashi, dropped by the store on February 27th to celebrate. I'm sure we'll have another chance to catch her soonwhen she performs at one of her regular ani-song idol concerts in Akihabara!
