If Twitter account Animeburgers is any indication, Japan loves to draw burgers as much as I love to eat them. Mobile Suit Gundam is famous for kick-starting the "real robot" genre, but did you know it also features one of the earliest instances of on-screen cow consumption? McDaniel Hamburgers serves as the secret headquarters of the Anti-Earth Union Group in Zeta Gundam and now it's come to Tokyo to give busy businessmen a corner to chill out. Let's dig in!
Burgers are my comfort food and let me tell you these were the best I've ever had at a fast food joint. The patties tasted fresh, not frozen, while the supple buns were moist and steamy--yikes, better lay off the food porn before this turns into a Meshi review!
Char customized his Zaku patty with chunky tomato sauce, olives, and capers. The avocado on the Zaku II burger was as fresh and fatty as tuna sushi with wasabi and soy sauce to match. And if you want an old-fashioned classic, you can't go wrong with the RX-78-2 Gundam cheeseburger.
If you have a sweet tooth I recommend the chilled melon Haro roll cake or the limited edition Gundam Unicorn soda--the syrup is radioactive green just like the Psycho-Frame.
The Haro latte and Jaburo coffee bean-flavored castella were also nice for a pick-me-up. The Principality of Zeon may have put the Earth Federation Forces in a tight spot but I gotta say, the EFF is years ahead of Zeon when it comes to brewing technology.
The cafe is at Tokyo Station just outside the Yaesu Underground Central Exit, making it a mere four minute detour from Akihabara and a convenient stop on your otaku tour. Bright Noa would approve!
