Since viewers probably assume that those black bars at the top and bottom of the screen are overlays added in post, Le Fruit de la Grisaia director Motoki Tanaka took to Twitter to let everyone know that his production is legit. The animators use paper with the same widescreen aspect ratio as theatrical anime so what's on screen is exactly what's on the page. Now if only they can achieve cinematic quality on a TV series I'll be satisfied.
