Bladedance of Elementalers Exhibit Knocks Our Socks Off

Bladedance of Elementalers (AKA The Irregular at Areishia Spirit Academy), takes "fantasy anime" to new heights of escapism. I don't buy the setup for a minute but that doesn't stop me from imagining myself in Kamito's position. Oh, high school would have been so much better if only we had magic duels. But there's no sense living in the past. I vow to enjoy what I have now, and today that means this exhibit at Akihabara GAMERS!

The tricky part about light novel adaptations--aside from trimming the story to fit the screen--is finding the sweet spot between the essence of the original illustrations and a TV production budget. The characters need to be easy to animate, you know. Overall I think the anime staff did a great job recreating the designs and key scenes from the books. But don't take my word, have a look and judge for yourself.

The first printing of the Blu-ray/DVD comes with a TRPG rule book (along with a ton of other goodies)! You can tell the people working on the show have a sense of humor. See the goofy illustrations from the voice cast for proof.

It's always surprising to see how small the characters are in person. Even more surprising, Japanese fans seem way more into Ellis and Claire than Est! How do I know? Well...

...this special corner lets you vote for your favorite sock, I mean, character. Knee-high! Argyle! Tube! I'll be thinking about you ladies the next time I do laundry.
